YESC STEM event, May 2024

The Mocean Energy team are passionate about inspiring the next generation to consider Science, Technology, Engineers and Mathematics (STEM) as part of their career paths – from school age through to those in higher education and beyond.

Yesterday saw some of our team attend an engaging and inspiring event at the Mining Museum in Midlothian, which formed part of the Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland (YESC) programme. This programme offers hands-on experiences for young people, as well as supports teachers, businesses and industries alike, proving to be an impactful education platform.

Primary children from Midlothian and the Borders attended the event, each getting involved in challenges set by various companies. Each team received 10 minutes to complete a challenge. Approximately 90 children completed our challenge.

The challenge set by Mocean Energy was to make waves in a small tank of water and to generate electricity using small wave energy converters. This involved understanding how wave energy is captured and converted into electrical energy. The pupils asked lots of great questions and worked as a team to solve the challenge, gaining valuable life skills along the way.

Gabriel Scarlett, Numerical Modeller at Mocean Energy, said: “It was a tiring but very rewarding day for all involved. We are looking forward to inspiring more school children next week at Herriot Watt University.”
